The Mijoux ski-piste study, and its real sources
Every worked example in this guide belongs to one real place: a ski piste at Mijoux, in the Monts Jura, in the French Jura at about 1,333 m — below the treeline, which is why the comparison plot turned out to be forest rather than grassland.
It is a good case study twice over. If you are writing your own investigation, it shows what a real strategy, real perspectives and real sources look like when they are pieced together. And if you are studying 1.1 Perspectives — with a little systems and sustainability alongside — it is a single, concrete environmental issue with a live argument around it.
Managing a ski piste — grooming it in winter, mowing and grazing it in summer — holds a montane slope open as species-rich grassland instead of letting it return to forest. The same management is now under strain, because the resort’s snow is becoming unreliable and a €31 million plan is trying to keep it viable. So a decision about a hillside pulls in the resort, a nature reserve, a handful of graziers and the public purse — who want different things done with the same ground.
The perspectives
A perspective is how a group views the issue, and why. Here are five, each tagged with the kind of value driving it. In an IA these are what Criterion B asks you to name and attribute.
Keep the ski domain viable. The Syndicat Mixte des Monts Jura runs the resort, and a small mountain economy depends on winter visitors. Its €31 million scheme (2025–2027) replaces lifts and builds a four-season offer — precisely because the snow is becoming unreliable.
The recovery of natural cover and the management of open habitats. The Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la Haute Chaîne du Jura oversees the massif; where a run is left ungroomed (piste nature non damée), the land is allowed to return.
To keep the summer pasture. The massif's meadows have been grazed on summer transhumance since the Middle Ages — around 3,500 ha supporting roughly 4,000 cattle. The open grassland is their pasture; if it closes up or is rewilded, a livelihood and a tradition go with it.
Groomed, reliable slopes in winter and access to the mountain in summer. Their expectations are what the resort's investment is trying to keep meeting as conditions change.
The Département de l'Ain and Pays de Gex Agglomération validate and fund the scheme. Because the money and the planning powers sit in different hands, decisions are incremental — part of why the tension plays out as delay.
Why the goals collide
These are not just differing opinions — they are conflicting goals. Keeping the slope groomed and open is an economic necessity for the resort and a maintained pasture for the graziers; the reserve’s objective is the recovery of natural cover, which the same grooming prevents. Nobody can act alone, because the money and the planning powers sit in different hands.
So the tension mostly produces delay, with a dose of uneven costs: where a run is left to return, the environmental benefit is general while the lost summer pasture falls on a few graziers. That — a named consequence, not just “they disagree” — is what turns a list of stakeholders into an explained tension.
The system behind it
The argument acts on a system. Read left to right: management changes conditions, conditions shape the plant community, and the community is what gets measured.

Because the canopy is kept open, nothing shades out, so no single species dominates — a management-maintained equilibrium. Remove the management and the loop breaks: succession takes over, scrub and forest move in, and the community shifts to something less diverse. The grassland is not “natural”; it is held in place.
The sustainability question
Sustainability is whether this can carry on, and at whose expense. Here the biodiversity is a by-product of an activity that may not last: if the snow goes, the skiing goes, and the grassland persists only if someone keeps grazing or mowing it. So “can it continue?” has two answers at once — the skiing may not, and the habitat depends on whoever keeps managing the land. It is a neat reminder that a “natural” asset can be entirely contingent on human decisions.

This is the real strategy at the centre of the example: a plan people are genuinely arguing about, produced by a named authority, with a reference and a budget.

It is the mechanism behind the example — why managing a piste changes what grows on it — and the kind of academic source that justifies measuring soil and light, not only plants.

- The nature reserve both protects the site and manages grazing on it. Is that a contradiction, or a perspective in its own right?
- If the snow goes and the skiing ends, what happens to the grassland's biodiversity? Who would have to act to keep it?
- Where do the costs and the benefits of leaving a piste ungroomed fall? Is that distribution fair?
- Which perspective do you find most persuasive — and what piece of evidence would change your mind?
In your IA: notice the shape — the strategy is real and cited, each perspective is attributed to a named body, and the tension names the goals that conflict and what the conflict does. That is what earns the top band in Criterion B.

The ski piste investigation used throughout this guide is a teaching reconstruction. The location, sampling design, plant records and soil data come from real fieldwork at Mijoux in the French Jura, and the sources above are genuine. The canopy cover measurements in the worked example were added to illustrate good practice and were not part of the original fieldwork.
